The conversation

IN THIS
EPISODE.

How do you tell a story people remember? I sat down with Mark Sylvester, a TEDx producer who co-founded Wavefront, the company that won an Oscar for the animation software Maya.

Mark went from cooking in Santa Barbara kitchens to starting a computer graphics company six months after a one day course in 1983. We get into the nine seconds you have to earn someone's attention, the eye contact trick he uses to hold a whole room, why he keeps a story arsenal, and the mind map method that became his TEDx talk. He also tells the Steve Jobs notebook story, how giving the software to schools put Maya in front of 500,000 learners, and how he became mates with Douglas Adams.

Then he runs me through a live improv lesson, and I find out why "yes and" beats "no but" by a long shot.
