The conversation
How do you get Nike to sponsor a YouTube channel before you've posted a single video? I sat down with Ben Sharf, a former Division I hockey player, founder of the Shopify software company Platter, and the creator behind the YouTube series Birthday Series and the podcast Turning Pro.
Ben walks through the 131 mile relay run from Montauk to Times Square that became his first episode, with 20 runners and 21 brand sponsors, and the call that had Nike emailing back 12 minutes later to say yes. We also cover the year and a half he spent building a content team before he posted, why he pulled out of a consulting job 12 hours before his first day, and life 338 days without a drink.
He also explains why he thinks great founders share two traits: insecurity and delusional optimism.
